Space Biomanufacturing of Lactic Acid: Conceptual Design and Techno-Economic Analysis

Overview

This script computes the total Equivalent System Mass (ESM) for a lactic acid production system. It evaluates three microorganisms (E. coli, S. cerevisiae, and P. pastoris) under two preservation modalities: Cryopreserved and Lyophilized.

Key Features

Multi-organism Evaluation: Comparative analysis between three microorganisms:  

  • Escherichia coli  
  • Saccharomyces cerevisiae  
  • Pichia pastoris

Preservation Modalities: Evaluates the system impact of two cell storage methods:  

  • Cryopreserved: High energy/cooling requirement.  
  • Lyophilized: Focused on mass reduction and stability.

System Mass Scaling: Includes mass balances for:  

  • Cell Storage  
  • Seed Train  
  • Principal Fermentation

Methodology

The model utilizes the Equivalent System Mass (ESM) metric, which normalizes different resource requirements (mass, volume, power and cooling) into a single mass-based value.
